InaDisc is an online Psychological test that is based on the DISC theory proposed by the American psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston in the early 1920s. In his book titled ‘The Emotions of Normal People’, he divided the individual behaviours displayed when a person interacts with the environment into 4 types, namely Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance. However, William Marston did not invent a testing tool to measure the four components. The DISC testing tool was first developed by experts for military purposes and was mainly used as a part of the screening test for US American soldiers in the advent of World War II. Today, the DISC test has been further developed by experts in many countries and is used widely in the business world. There are many variations for the name of the DISC test, depending on the name of the developer.
InaDisc is a development of the DISC test that has been done in Indonesia since 2005 by a team of psychologists from University of Indonesia. In the beginning, InaDisc was made as a computer software named PCAS (Personal Characteristic Analysis System) and as of now has been used by many companies in Indonesia for the selection and development of employees. To keep up with the development of technology, PCAS was then developed into an online test called InaDisc (Indonesia DISC). The questions in InaDisc are slightly different from other DISC tests, but InaDisc still uses the convention of “M” (most) to describe the behaviour that is most suitable and “L” (Least) to describe behaviours that are least suitable. Through InaDisc, we can have a overview of the Personality, Strengths and Weaknesses of the self, Carreer match, Behaviours that will surface in stressful conditions and How to better form a relationship with a certain person. Through InaDisc, we can also measure how similar our personality types are as compared to other people.
In the early 1920s, an American psychologist, Dr. William Moulton Marston, developed a theory to explain a person’s emotional responses. At that time, it was only used for people that are mentally ill or criminal offenders. Only in 1928, Marston developed a theory to examine the personalities of normal people which led to the birth of DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Compliance). Marston also developed a book entitled “The Emotions of Normal People”. DISC theory classifies 4 types of individual behaviours displayed when a person interacts with the environment which are Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance. This is a rather complex construction, and it is not easy to describe in a word, but it can be grouped as Assertiveness, Communication, Patience and Structure.
The Dominance type seeks challenges, likes fast decision making, unafraid of conflicts, confident and has a great vision to change their environment. This individual is a type that is demanding towards self or others when pressured and will be dominant and less communicative and also does not really have an emotional approach towards their environment.
The Influence type enjoys making connections with people, communicating and working with others. An individual who is always enthusiastic and spirited, easily trusts others and highly respects other people. Oftentimes, this individual becomes an inspiration to those around him and always comfortable in a group setting. This team player does not like being rejected by his surroundings, sometimes reckless and not neat or meticulous.
The Steadiness type is characterized by patience, diligence and attentiveness. Has a calm and quiet demeanour, not easily bored by routine tasks. Enjoys calmness, dislikes conflict and likes an environment without much change. However, the individuals are selective in choosing friends, dislikes sudden changes and can be stubborn once they adopt a stand.
The Compliance type is characterized by an affinity for things that related to details, following procedures, and responsibility. Individuals of this group are full of considerations, critical, perfectionist, and set high standards for their work, which they would seriously try to achieve. However, this group of individuals are slow in making decisions, cannot easily accept criticism and also less receptive to changes in the environment.
Based on experience, DISC is one of the tools that are quite powerful in identifying the personality traits of a person in a relatively short time. DISC gives many advantages when used, a complete battery of tests often contains many questions and takes a long time to complete, while the DISC test only consists of twenty-four questions, and can be completed in ten minutes or even less. Another advantage lies in the interpretation; DISC results can be generated through various software that has been greatly developed and could be done using automation, resulting in a much shorter time needed to generate reports.
A main limitation of DISC is that it could not measure the skills or knowledge of the person. For instance, the tool can conclude that someone is behaviourally and temperamentally suited for a certain profession, say Accountant, but DISC cannot assess whether or not the person has the skills and expertise to carry out the tasks of an Accountant well.
